Every wall clock we make is built by hand from natural materials — preserved plants, solid timber, or wood cast with epoxy resin. This section covers all three, and the differences between them are worth understanding before choosing.

What they share: a silent quartz movement, a single AA battery, and no mass-produced parts beyond the mechanism itself.

If the clock is going somewhere it should blend into a green scheme, take the first. If it sits among wooden furniture, the second. If the room needs a single strong object, the third.

The Silent Clock Movement

All our wall clocks use silent sweep quartz. The second hand glides continuously rather than stepping once per second, so there is no tick.

This is the single most practical thing about them and the thing customers thank us for afterwards. A conventional quartz movement is inaudible during the day and impossible to ignore at night, which is why so many decorative clocks end up in a drawer within a month of purchase.

One AA battery runs a clock for roughly a year. We do not supply batteries, because they lose charge sitting in a warehouse and a dead battery in the box is worse than no battery at all.

Moss Wall Clocks With and Without a Dial

Many of our moss wall clocks have no numerals. You read them by the angle of the hands, which is how anyone reads an analogue clock beyond arm’s length anyway.

That works in a living room or hallway, where you glance at the time for two seconds. It works less well in a kitchen or an office, where you want to read minutes exactly. Models with markers exist for those positions — check the individual product before ordering if precision matters.

Sizes and Position

• Living room — larger diameters read from across the room; a small clock on a big wall looks accidental.
• Kitchen — go for legibility over subtlety, and keep it away from the cooking zone, since grease is far harder to remove from natural material than dust.
• Hallway — at eye level, where it is glanced at on the way past.
• Bedroom — silent movement matters most here; all of ours qualify.
• Office and reception — a handmade clock reads differently from a plastic one in a space where everything else is standard-issue.

How the Materials Age

Preserved plants hold their colour for 7 to 10 years indoors, then soften gradually in tone. Solid timber darkens slightly over the first years, oak most noticeably. Epoxy is stable and changes least of the three.

In a clock that combines materials, this means the piece shifts subtly over a decade rather than staying fixed. Most owners never notice; those who do tend to like it.

Choosing a Diameter

Size is the decision people revise most often after the fact, almost always upward.

A clock has to be read at the distance it will normally be read from, and rooms are bigger than they feel when you are standing at the wall with a tape measure. A face that looks generous in your hands can be unreadable from the sofa six metres away, particularly on models without numerals where you are judging the angle of two thin hands.

The rough guide: in a hallway or kitchen where you pass within two metres, a modest diameter is fine. In a living room read from across the space, go larger than instinct suggests. And on a large empty wall, the clock is functioning as wall decoration as much as a timepiece, which pushes the size up again.

Handmade Means Variation

Every piece here is assembled individually, and that has a consequence worth stating before you order rather than after it arrives.

No two are identical. Timber grain differs board to board, preserved material falls differently every time it is packed, and resin pours vary in depth and colour saturation across a single casting. Product photographs show a representative example of a model, not the specific item that will be boxed for you.

For most customers this is the reason to buy rather than a caveat. If you need several matching clocks — for an office with multiple rooms, say — order them together so they come from the same materials, and tell us that matching matters.

Clock Care and Lifespan

No watering, misting or feeding — none of these clocks contain anything alive.

Keep them out of direct sunlight, which fades greenery and can dry out glued joints in wooden models over years. Avoid steam and high humidity, which affects timber more than it affects preserved plants.

Dust with a cool hairdryer on the lowest setting. When changing the battery, lay the clock face-down on something soft rather than on a bare table, so the rim of the composition does not take the weight.
