A round moss mirror is a circle of glass with a ring of preserved plants around it. The greenery sits where a frame would normally go, so the outline is soft and irregular instead of a hard machined edge.

Round is the shape most people want for a moss mirror in a hallway, and adding texture to it solves the problem that plain round mirrors have: they are useful and completely characterless.

Why the Circle Suits a Moss Mirror

A circle has no direction. That sounds abstract until you hang one next to a rectangular one and see the difference — the rectangle points somewhere, the circle simply sits.

Preserved plants exploit that. Because the ring has no corners, the material can be worked continuously around the glass with no point where the pattern has to turn a right angle. Corners are where a hand-filled edge betrays itself; a circle has none to betray.

The practical benefit is levelling. A round mirror cannot hang crooked in any way the eye detects, which matters more than it sounds — a mirror hanging slightly off level tilts its reflection too, which is why crooked mirrors bother people more than crooked pictures.

The Moss Ring Around the Glass

Reindeer moss is the usual filling for a round moss mirror. Its branching structure gives an even depth all the way round, and evenness matters here more than in a flat panel: the eye compares the organic ring directly against the perfect circle of the glass, and any thin patch shows immediately.

Some round moss mirrors keep a strict, uniform ring. Others deliberately break it — denser at one point, with ferns or grasses escaping the outline, so the greenery looks like it grew around the mirror rather than being applied to it. The first reads as designed, the second as found. Both work; the choice depends on how formal the room is.

Round Mirror Sizes and Position

Position Guide
Above a console Diameter roughly two-thirds the console width; 15–25 cm of clear wall between them
Hallway, no furniture Centre at 150–160 cm from the floor; leave clear space either side
Above a dresser Narrower than the dresser, wide enough to use — small mirrors look decorative and function badly
Opposite a window As large as the wall takes; this is where a mirror does most work for the room

Hanging It

  1. Mark the centre point of the moss mirror at the height you want, not the fixing point — they are different, and the difference is the length of the hanger.
  2. Check for pipes and cables before drilling, particularly on bathroom and kitchen walls.
  3. Use fixings rated for the weight. Glass makes a round moss mirror heavier than a panel of the same diameter.
  4. Hang it and check the height from across the room. Levelling is not a concern with a circle, which is one less thing to get wrong.

Pairing It With Other Pieces

A round mirror rarely hangs alone in a hallway. The arrangement that works most reliably is a mirror above a console with one object on the surface below — a bowl, a lamp, a single tall vessel — and nothing else competing.

Where people go wrong is symmetry. Two identical objects flanking the mirror, one at each end of the console, reads as a display rather than as a room somebody lives in. One object placed off-centre looks considered, and it is also what actually happens when a house is in use.

Hanging a panel of matching diameter beside the mirror is the other common pairing, and it works because the shapes agree while the surfaces do not — one reflects, one absorbs.

Care and Cleaning

The greenery needs nothing — no water, no light, no feeding — and holds its appearance for 7 to 10 years indoors.

The glass needs the usual attention, with one rule that matters more than any other: spray the cloth, never the mirror. Overspray runs down into the ring and cleaning products strip glycerin from preserved material far faster than plain water does. Wipe from the centre outward and stop before the edge.

For dust on the greenery, a cool hairdryer on the lowest setting.

Round Moss Mirrors: Frequently Asked Questions

What diameter should I choose?

Roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture below. On a bare wall, larger than instinct suggests.

How heavy is it?

Heavier than a panel of the same size because of the glass. On plasterboard use fixings rated for the load.

How do I clean it without damaging the ring?

Spray the cloth, not the mirror, and work from the centre outward.

Does it need levelling?

No — the shape makes it impossible to hang visibly crooked. Only the height matters.

Can I order a custom diameter?

Yes. Send the wall dimensions and we will advise on proportion first.
