How Our Decorative Moss Balls Are Made

Each decorative moss ball is built up and covered by hand with preserved moss, worked so the surface is even and the join is invisible. Reindeer lichen is the usual choice, since its branching texture reads well from every angle and a sphere has nothing but angles.

Some decorative moss balls use cushion species for a denser, more granular surface. Others combine material with preserved ferns, grasses or dried flowers pressed into the sphere, which turns a plain object into something closer to an arrangement.

Because each one is covered by hand, no two are identical in surface pattern — which is only noticeable when you group several together, and generally reads as an advantage there.

Styling Decorative Moss Balls at Home

A decorative moss ball is the most forgiving shape in interior decoration. It has no front, no correct orientation and no way to place it wrongly, which is why decorators reach for round objects when a surface needs something and nothing specific comes to mind.

In a bowl — three or five spheres, filled to just below the rim so the vessel’s profile stays visible. Wooden bowls are the usual pairing.
On a tray — with candles or books on a coffee table, where the round form softens a rectangular arrangement.
Along a shelf — spaced between books rather than lined up; odd numbers, varied sizes.
In a glass vessel — a cloche or open jar, where the sphere is the only object and the container frames it.
As part of a centerpiece — combined with other elements on a dining table.

The rule that matters: vary the size. Three spheres of the same diameter read as a product display. Three noticeably different sizes read as styling.

Sizes and Grouping

Small moss balls work in groups and in glass vessels. Medium ones are the versatile size — they hold a bowl on their own and group well. Large ones function as single objects, usually on a console or a mantel where one substantial thing beats several small ones.

Preserved Moss Balls as a Gift

These are among the easier things to give, for a practical reason: a sphere needs no wall, no decision and no care from the person receiving it. It goes on any surface, in any room, and stays as it is.

That makes them workable presents for people whose homes you do not know well — colleagues, hosts, teachers — where a plant would be a small ongoing obligation rather than a gift. A single medium sphere in a simple vessel covers most occasions without being a statement about anyone’s taste.

Why There Is No Care Routine

The moss is preserved: the sap has been replaced with a plant-based glycerin solution that keeps the fibres soft and the colour stable. Nothing is alive, so nothing needs water, light or feeding.

Indoors, a sphere holds its appearance for 7 to 10 years. Direct sunlight fades colour, so keep them off sunny windowsills; sustained humidity softens the material, so a steamy bathroom is a poor location.

Dust with a cool hairdryer on the lowest setting, turning the sphere as you go. Do not wipe them and do not wash them — water strips the glycerin and the damage is not reversible.
