All our moss decor is made from preserved plants and sits on a surface rather than hanging on a wall: vases, bowls, centerpieces, lettering, seasonal pieces and small objects for shelves and desks.

The common thread across our moss decor is that none of it needs anything from you. No water, no light, no feeding, no repotting, no remembering. That is the practical argument, and after a decade of making these things we can say it is the argument that actually sells them.

What Preserved Moss Decor Means

Harvested moss is treated with a plant-based glycerin solution that replaces the sap inside the cell walls. The tissue stays soft and flexible, the colour stabilises, and biological activity stops.

What you end up with is neither a living plant nor an artificial one. It has the texture and colour variation of something that grew, because it did, and the maintenance requirements of an ornament. You will also see this described as stabilized moss, particularly by European suppliers — same process, different word.

The material lasts 7 to 10 years indoors. That figure assumes normal conditions: out of direct sunlight, away from constant damp, not handled daily.

Moss Decor and Biophilic Design

The term describes designing interiors so people have contact with natural materials indoors. In practice it usually means plants, and in practice plants indoors have a failure rate that nobody mentions in the design magazines.

Offices are the clearest case. A specification calls for greenery, plants arrive, and within a year most of them are dead, replaced with plastic, or kept alive by a service contract nobody budgeted for. The gap between the design intent and the reality is maintenance, and maintenance is the thing that gets cut first.

Preserved material closes that gap by removing the requirement entirely. Whether it delivers the same wellbeing benefits as living plants is a fair question and not one we can answer with our own research — what we can say is that a preserved arrangement in a windowless meeting room is still there and still green after five years, and a pot plant in the same room is not.

Choosing for Each Room

• Dining table — low arrangements, so they do not block sightlines across the table. Wooden bowls and long dough-bowl formats.
• Console and entryway — the first surface a visitor sees, and the easiest to style badly. One considered object beats three small ones.
• Shelves — small pieces, coconut vessels and spheres, grouped in odd numbers rather than pairs.
• Desk — something compact that survives being ignored during a busy week, which is most weeks.
• Office reception — lettering or a substantial arrangement; this is where preserved material earns its cost against replacing florals.
• Bathroom — ventilated ones only, and small pieces rather than large ones.

Where Not to Place It

Three positions cause almost every moss decor problem we hear about.

Direct sunlight. A south-facing windowsill fades colour within a couple of years, and dyed shades go faster than natural ones. This is the single most common cause of a piece looking tired early.

Constant steam. An unventilated bathroom or directly above a kettle. The material will not rot, but the colour dulls and the texture softens over months.

Outdoors. Including covered patios and porches. UV and dew together degrade preserved material quickly, and there is no version of it that is weatherproof.

Buying for a Business

Commercial orders behave differently from domestic ones, mostly because the comparison is different.

A household compares a preserved arrangement against a houseplant or a vase of flowers, and the sums are personal. A restaurant replacing table florals weekly across twenty covers, or an office paying a plant service to visit monthly, is comparing an annual operating cost against a one-off purchase. That calculation tends to answer itself, which is why most of our repeat business comes from commercial buyers rather than from individuals.

Two practical notes for that kind of order. Buy the full quantity in one batch, so pieces match — natural material varies subtly between batches, and the difference is invisible in isolation but obvious across ten identical tables. And specify with the maintenance staff in mind rather than the designer: pieces that will be moved daily for cleaning need to tolerate handling, which favours sturdier vessels over delicate arrangements.

Care and Lifespan

Nothing routine, and this is not marketing shorthand — there is genuinely no maintenance schedule.

Never water any of it. Water washes glycerin out of preserved plants and leaves them hard and brittle, which is irreversible. If dust settles, lift it off with a cool hairdryer on its lowest setting. Do not vacuum and do not wipe with a damp cloth.

For seasonal pieces that get packed away, store them in a rigid box rather than a bag, indoors rather than in a garage or loft. Pressure marks and damp storage cause more damage between seasons than a decade of use does.
