It hangs on a wall like any other piece, but almost nobody buys one for themselves — these leave our workshop as anniversary presents, wedding gifts and housewarming pieces far more often than as decor someone chose for their own hallway.
That changes how our moss hearts are built. A gift has to look considered rather than mass-produced, so each heart is filled by hand and no two are identical in the way the material falls.
Our Moss Heart Designs
The single moss heart is the straightforward version: one shape, filled edge to edge, usually in reindeer lichen because its springy texture catches light along the curve and gives the outline depth.
The double heart — two shapes overlapping or set side by side — is the one people choose for weddings and anniversaries, for reasons that need no explanation. It is also the version that works best in larger sizes, because the negative space between the two shapes keeps a big piece from reading as a solid block of green.
Hearts with preserved roses are the third variant. Red roses against Iceland lichen is the combination people ask for most; the roses are preserved by the same process as everything else, so they keep their shape and colour rather than browning at the edges after a fortnight.
Why a Moss Heart Works as a Gift
Cut flowers say something for four days and then go in the bin. A preserved piece says the same thing for years, which is the entire argument and the reason this shape sells the way it does.
- Wedding gift — survives the move to a first shared home, unlike almost everything else on a gift list.
- Anniversary — the double heart, in a size that suits the wall they actually have.
- Valentine’s Day — order early; February is our busiest week for this shape.
- Housewarming — needs no care from someone still unpacking boxes.
- Engagement — often ordered with roses, sometimes with initials worked into the composition.
Sizes and Personalisation
Moss heart size should follow the wall, not the sentiment. A small heart on a wide empty wall looks lost; a large one in a narrow hallway crowds the space. Measure the wall before ordering and, if you are unsure, send us a photograph — we would rather advise beforehand than remake afterwards.
Personalisation is possible: initials, a date, or a specific colour of preserved rose to match a wedding palette. Because each piece is assembled by hand, this adds to the lead time rather than to the complexity.
Care and Lifespan
None, in any practical sense. There is no watering, feeding or trimming, because the material is preserved rather than alive.
Indoors a moss heart holds its appearance for 7 to 10 years. Two things shorten that: direct sunlight, which fades colour and hits red roses hardest, and constant damp. Hang it away from a south-facing window and out of an unventilated bathroom and it will outlast most of the furniture around it. Dust comes off with a cool hairdryer on its lowest setting.
Moss Hearts: Frequently Asked Questions
Is it real?
Yes. Natural lichen and preserved flowers, harvested and treated with a glycerin-based solution. Not alive, not plastic.
How long does a moss heart last?
Seven to ten years indoors. Kept out of direct sun, they hold colour at the upper end of that range.
Can you make it in a specific colour?
Yes, within the range of preserved shades we stock. Wedding palettes are the usual reason for asking, and the answer is easier if you ask before ordering rather than after.
Does it arrive ready to hang?
Yes. Fixings are included and the piece is light enough for a standard wall plug.
Can I order it as a gift with a message?
Yes — tell us at checkout and we will send it without an invoice in the box.
