The practical benefit is delivery. A three-metre panel in one piece cannot get up a domestic staircase or into a passenger lift; the same panel in three sections goes anywhere.

• Stairwells — the classic case: a tall wall nobody can furnish, visible from two floors.

Mounting a Big Panel

Preserved moss is light for its bulk, which surprises people who expect a two-metre panel to be heavy. Even so, at this scale mounting deserves proper attention.

1. Establish a level line across the full width first. On a long wall, small errors at one end become obvious at the other.
2. Fix into something solid. On plasterboard, find the studs or use fixings rated for the load rather than the standard plug.
3. Spread the fixings. Multiple points along the top edge prevent the slow sag that shows up months later on wide pieces.
4. For sectioned pieces, hang the centre section first and work outward in both directions.
5. Finish by teasing the material along each join until the seam disappears.

Two people minimum, three for anything over two metres — not for weight, but because a large panel is awkward to hold level while the first fixing goes in.

Species and colour are specified at the same time. On a large surface, single-species fills read as calm and mixed compositions read as landscape; both work, and the choice depends on whether the piece should hold attention or sit in the background.

Care and Lifespan

Indoors, 7 to 10 years. No watering, feeding or light needed at any size.

One consideration specific to scale: large pieces often go on walls that catch afternoon sun through a stairwell window, and uneven fading across a wide surface looks far worse than uniform fading on a small one. Check where the light falls at different times of day before deciding on the position.

Dust with a cool hairdryer on the lowest setting. On a tall piece, work top to bottom.
