Concrete Vases with Moss

Reindeer lichen is the usual base — dense enough to hide the fixings completely, soft enough to contrast with the concrete rim. Provence and cushion species appear where a piece needs more relief.

Above that, the accents vary: preserved ferns, dried grasses, amaranth, eucalyptus stems, sometimes a preserved rose. On a small hexagon vessel one or two elements is plenty; on a tall faceted vase there is room for a fuller arrangement with real height.

The proportion rule we work to: the arrangement should read as roughly the same visual weight as the vessel. Overfill it and the concrete disappears, which defeats the point of choosing concrete. Underfill it and the piece looks unfinished.

Weight, and Why It Matters

A concrete moss vase is heavy, and that is a functional advantage rather than a drawback.

A lightweight vessel with a tall arrangement in it is unstable — it tips if someone brushes past, and on a desk it eventually will. Concrete gives a low centre of gravity, so even a piece with substantial height stays put.

The trade-off is that these are not objects you casually move around. Once a large vase is positioned, it tends to stay there, which is worth considering if you like rearranging rooms.

Where a Moss Vase Works Best

• Console and hallway tables — the weight suits a surface that gets knocked past daily.
• Office desks and reception counters — hexagon vessels particularly; stable, compact, nothing to spill.
• Dining tables — the lower forms, since tall pieces block sightlines across the table.
• Bathroom shelves — ventilated rooms only; concrete handles humidity better than the greenery does.
• Grouped in threes — different heights, same vessel family, which is the arrangement that works most reliably on a shelf.

Care and Cleaning

No watering — and with a vessel this convincingly vase-shaped, that instruction is worth repeating to anyone else in the house. Water washes glycerin out of preserved plants and does permanent damage, and in a sealed concrete vessel it also has nowhere to go.

The greenery holds its appearance for 7 to 10 years indoors, out of direct sunlight. Dust it with a cool hairdryer on the lowest setting.

The concrete itself needs nothing. It can be wiped with a dry or barely damp cloth, avoiding the planted area. Unsealed concrete can mark from oil or wine, so treat it like a stone surface rather than a glazed one.
