Moss Hexagon with Reindeer Moss

Geometric Botanical Acoustic Panels

The moss hexagon with reindeer moss integrates stabilized natural lichen into a precision-milled timber casing. Each hexagonal module combines dense cushions of Cladonia stellaris, commonly known as reindeer moss (Iceland moss), mounted securely inside a geometric hardwood frame. The tactile moss heads protrude beyond the recessed backing, generating a three-dimensional surface that breaks acoustic reflections across flat interior surfaces.

Hard surfaces such as drywall, glass, and concrete cause sound to bounce and generate reverberation. The porous, branched micro-structure of the preserved lichen absorbs high and mid-frequency sound waves, dampening room echo in residential lounges, home offices, and commercial workspaces. Arranging multiple modules together allows for custom honeycomb patterns across large wall expanses.

Materials and Preservation Process

The lichen undergoes an ecological preservation procedure using food-grade vegetable glycerin, water, and mineral salts. This stabilization replaces natural plant sap, halting all biological cellular decay while permanently retaining moisture-like flexibility and tactile softness. Because the biological cycle is arrested, the preserved moss requires zero watering, soil replenishment, or supplemental grow lighting.

The outer border is constructed from solid natural timber cut into equal sixty-degree angles. Each joint is mechanically joined and sealed to resist warping over time. Frame finishes include unfinished natural pine, painted white with visible grain lines, deep walnut brown, and matte black stain.

Technical Specifications and Sizing

Each geometric wall element is produced in five distinct outer diameters to accommodate diverse spatial configurations. The depth of the timber casing measures approximately 1.6 to 2.0 inches (4 to 5 cm), providing a protective rim for the lichen tufts.

The lichen retains its physical volume without shedding fibers or crumbling when kept within standard interior conditions. The mounting hardware on the reverse side sits flush against standard wall anchors or drywall screws.

Placement Guidelines and Environmental Requirements

Preserved reindeer moss performs continuously when interior relative humidity remains between 40% and 60%. If ambient humidity drops below 35%, lichen stems may temporarily harden. The texture softens naturally once ambient room humidity returns to typical levels. Avoid spraying or misting the surface with liquid, as water strips the preservative glycerin and accelerates pigment loss.

Position the frame away from direct UV sunlight and keep a minimum clearance of 5 feet (1.5 meters) from forced-air heating units, radiators, and fireplaces. Occasional airborne dust particles can be cleared gently with a low-speed cool hairdryer setting or an antistatic feather duster.

• Sunlight exposure: Keep away from unshaded south-facing windows to avoid pigment fading.
• Moisture exposure: Do not water, mist, or install in zones with direct water splashes.
• Cleaning routine: Natural antistatic surface properties repel ambient household dust.
